Public Forum - On the Road Again...CREATIVE TRANSPORTATION DESIGN January 21, 2005 - Ferguson Auditorium, ABTech, Asheville
Guest speakers in this public forum included Laurie Lundquist, artist and designer of bicycle=pedestrian overpasses in Arizona; Ed Davis, North Carolina Department of Transportation, Enhancement Project Consultant; and David Bender, North Carolina Department of Transportation Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation. Dian Magie provided an overview of images of projects from across the country and portions of the Traveling exhibit were hung in the Auditorium.

In collaboration with the North Carolina Arts Council, jeffrey York, Director of Public Art and Community Design for the state arts council provided information on state support for transportation design. Dian Magie showed images of projects from across the country that included artists on the design team.
Public Forum - Public Art and Environmental Design, January 2002
In collaboration with the Henderson County Arts Council, CCCD sponsored a regional forum Public Art and Environmental Design with three panel members. Mel Chin, nationally recognized environmental artist, showed slides of his work and discussed community involvement in design. Barbara Matilsky, author of Fragile Ecologies: Contemporary Artists' Interpretations and Solutions, provided an overview of the variety of artist projects from landfills to reclamation projects. Mary Jo Padgett, Hendersonville City Council Member and Director of Environmental Conservation Organization (ECO) discussed the local issues and political realities. The panel members offered examples of how artists have been involved in the preservation and the interpretation of the environment. More than 65 attended the forum in the Bo Thomas Multimedia Auditorium of Blue Ridge Community College.
Public Art and Transportation Design Forum, October 2001
In October 2001, CCCD co-sponsored with the Henderson County Arts Council, a forum on Public Art and Transportation Design held at Blue Ridge Community College. Over 75 elected officials, artists, and designers attended this presentation by panel members. Sam Katherine Campana, Mayor of Scottsdale, Arizona from 1996-2000 provided examples of major TEA-21 and DOT funded public art projects that enhance the transportation gateways in that state. Jim Hirschfield, Professor of Art, UNC-Chapel Hill and selected for public art commissions throughout the United States, discussed the role and responsibilities of an artist on a public art project. Rob Ayers, Director of the TEA-21 federal funded program for highway enhancements in North Carolina gave an overview of the type of projects that receive funding and the application process.
