Work in progress

David Nash, nationally recognized wood sculptor and land artist from Wales, accepted a residency invitation from CCCD for April 2003. Planning began in summer 2001 with representatives of the four UNC campus art departments involved in the residency - UNC-Asheville, Appalachian State University, Western Carolina University and East Carolina University - together with Penland School of Crafts where the residency took place.

During the residency, "Wood Quarry -The Creative Process," Nash created wood sculpture after first developing drawings of the sculpture. His month long residency was broken into five time blocks, with one faculty and four students participating in each time block. This provided 20 students and 5 faculty with an opportunity to work closely with this leading artist of the 21st Century. CCCD was awarded major support for this residency from a private foundation in spring 2002.
