(12/01/08): Really...over a year since the move?
I can hardly believe it was over a year ago that I signed the lease for our workshop. I just renewed our lease and felt a jolt of excitement. Moving into my first shop was a huge adventure full of unexpected hurdles and emotions. It took much longer to have it set up in a way that felt reasonably efficient. But, I now feel very happy in the shop and can see it is an ever changing space. It gets better every week. My shop mates, Brent Skidmore and Sylvie Rosenthal, are great individuals and amazing artists. Brent is a great mentor and wonderful friend. His energy is a great addition to any space and I am incredibly thankful for his involvement. Sylvie adds to my day with her humor and intense work energy. Her technical skills and experience are very beneficial for me. Please read CCCD's Septemeber ENEWS to learn of my adventure from university life to current life.

(12/01/08): Gregg Museum of Art & Design
One of the most exciting things I did in the shop this past year was completing a commission for the Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State University in Raleigh, NC. The piece is a full size kimono made of deconstructed and reassembled fast food to-go bags. My Ma taught me to sew when I was about four or five years old and it has always been an enjoyable process for me. She is a great quilt-maker and we have plans to collaborate on her next quilt design.

Proud Partner, 2008 Paper, thread

(12/01/08): Gregg Museum of Art & Design (part 3)
Process Shots: The bag is deconstructed by cutting along glue seams to flatten.

(12/01/08): Gregg Museum of Art & Design (part 4)
Process Shots: Patterns are removed using templates and a knife. Some bag designs are much better during this process than others, rendering more patterns with more interesting graphics. Quite a lot of attention goes into each bag to ensure optimal usage. The bag shown here is by far the best bag on the market that I have found.

(08/31/07): The Move Is On!
Well, today should be my last day in Asheville...I had planned to leave a week ago. Exciting news! I have found a sweet studio space in downtown Asheville (see attached image). It is about 1400 sq. ft. and is just south of The Orange Peel off of Biltmore Avenue. I have one great studio mate already committed, Brent Skidmore, and one amazing potential that would be a great addition to the working environment. There is a huge momma groundhog behind behind our building, Merrigold, who is quite a sweetheart. I stayed longer because I wanted to find housing and I met many new and wonderful friends, as well as saw many great old friends. The Skidmore-Hemmer household was very generous and wonderful with the sharing of their home with me. And, it was great to be woken up by their two boys every morning...early and with much excitement. I was able to go the opening of a really great show at Blue Sprial 1 Gallery last night. The exhibition showcased artists working at The EnergyXchange ( www.energyxchange.org ) in Burnsville, NC. The work was very good and the manner in which they are working is great...check out the website! I especially enjoyed David Eichelberger's functional ceramics. Now I head back to the midwest to finish a project and start packing! See you again soon, North Carolina!

My Pops came down for a couple days and we had a great time. We were able to visit the Center for Craft, Creativity, and Design and see the wonderful Dian Magie. Also we were able to see their current exhibition, Michael Singer's "Designs for a Sustainable Future," a fascinating presentation of his public projects. Now I head back to the midwest to finish a project and start packing! See you again soon, North Carolina!

(07/17/07): Excitement in Transition
Since graduation in May, my craft has taken me to many amazing places. I was given the opportunity to travel to Dubai, United Arab Emirates and exhibit at the Dubai World Trade Center. The city was very interesting and the poeple could not have been friendlier. I was also able to attend the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, ICFF, at the Javits Center in New York City. This was a great experience! The exhibitors showcased more than just furniture, there was plenty of exciting design and craft to be seen. Many young people were in attendance, both exhibiting and viewing, which was very inspiring. Also very inspiring was this year's Furniture Society Conference in Victoria, British Columbia. There were many great Panel Discussions and Individual Presentations. I traveled through Vancouver on the journey home and was fortunate enough to see a very comprehensive Andrea Zittel exhibit at the art museum, Vancouver Art Gallery. All the mean while, I have been searching for studio space in Asheville, North Carolina. I worked on a friend's house in Asheville for two weeks and was able to meet some wonderful people. I am very excited, and anxious, to make the move! I have some great leads on available spaces and really hope to be moved by the end of the summer. In the meanwhile I have things to make, so I am setting up shop in my folks' barn. I just purchased a Wilton horizontal bandsaw and can't wait to set it up later this week. I will be posting images of projects I am currently working on in future entries. I would welcome any dialogue from other Fellowship recipients and inquiring minds alike. timothymaddox@gmail.com
